Q. 57. How should we read and hear the Word of God?
We should attend to the Word with diligence, preparation, and prayer, receive it with faith and love, lay it up in our hearts, and practice it in our lives.

The Word. Scripture is the Word of God (see Q. 3). “Whoever pays attention to [the Scriptures] will find God in them” (Tertullian, Apology 18–20).
Diligence. “Unto a Christian man there can be nothing either more necessary or profitable than the knowledge of Holy Scripture, forasmuch as in it is contained God’s true Word, setting forth his glory and also man’s duty” (Cranmer, Book of Homilies 1). In most parts of the world today, where Scripture is more readily available than ever before, there is no excuse for neglecting to spend meaningful time in God’s Word every day (see the daily Bible reading plans which begin on page 278 and page 282).
Preparation, and prayer. We can prepare to receive God’s holy Word by examining our hearts in his presence, confessing sin, and seeking him in prayer. A prayer for illumination is a prayer that is offered before reading Scripture, asking for the same Spirit who inspired the sacred writings to enlighten our hearts and minds as we read them (see page 275, “Prayers for Illumination”). Once read and understood, Scripture guides our prayers, so that we may worship God properly and ask for things agreeable to God’s will (see Q. 58).
Receive. Humble receptivity to God’s Word is exemplified by the virgin Mary: “let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38). Although she did not fully understand what she saw and heard, Mary “treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart” (Luke 2:19; cf. 2:51). That person is truly blessed who believes God’s Word, delights in it, meditates on it throughout the day, and allows it to direct every area of his or her life (Psalm 1:1–2).
Practice. Genuine faith works by love and expresses itself in a life of obedience to God’s Word (see Q. 51). “The soul watered by sacred Scripture grows hearty and bears fruit in due season. This is the orthodox faith” (John of Damascus, Orthodox Faith 4.17). “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).
